The business of traveling and tourism is booming every year and people depend on agents and tour guides to help them make the most of a trip or vacation. Travel agents sell travel related products and services on behalf of vendors and suppliers such as airlines and hotels. A travel agent must be knowledgeable and resourceful. A tourist and traveler should have access to airline, hotel, railroad, cruiseliner and car packages. Agents must also be able to cater to business travelers and meet special needs, time restrictions and unique accommodations. Travel agents can work independently or part of an agency. Offers can be found at travel agencies that are unavailable elsewhere because travel agencies will often network amongst each other in separate countries. Skills and knowledge necessary to being a good travel agent include understanding foreign regions and its infrastructure and also the ability to be a good salesperson.

Training and receiving an education online can greatly benefit a current or potential travel agent. There is a wealth of resources that can be found on the Internet that is often not available anywhere else. The average annual income for a travel agent in the United States is $31,870. Timing and the global economy are great factors influencing a travel agent’s income, but his or her education and training are of equal importance. A knowledgeable and skilled travel agent will be far more successful than one who is not. Travel agents who know what they are doing will often get referrals or repeat business. Learning about the business online can be a tremendous benefit for those who want to go into the travel business. Also, with vendors such as airlines selling packages directly to customers online, a travel agent must be more knowledgeable and capable in order to stay in competition and offer customers the best they can possibly find. Learning online is the best thing a travel agent can do to stay competitive and grow his or her business and client base.
