Surgical techs are part of the surgical team that supports the surgeon during an operation. A single surgeon may need as many as five surgical techs to help ensure a smooth, successful operation.
Surgical techs assist by setting up and resetting the operating room before and after a surgery, preparing the patient, and by sterilizing and passing surgical instruments during an operation.
Surgical tech education may consist of a two-year associate’s degree program, or a one-year certificate program for those who already have a degree in another field. Surgical tech students study life-science and medical subjects such as biology, pharmacology, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and surgical procedures.
The average salary of a surgical tech in the US is around $40,000 per year.
