Forestry – Online Training and Certificate Programs

Forestry is the art and science of managing forests, tree plantations and related natural resources. A forester is one who works in forestry and has a passion for biology, wildlife, the outdoors and maintaining healthy ecosystems. The job can include arranging for wood to be used for raw materials, accommodating wildlife, maintaining regional water quality, recreation and landscape to name a few. Foresters have very demanding tasks and a huge responsibility in keeping balance within a forest, but the job is also very rewarding and satisfying. The art of forestry is performed almost entirely outdoors in an environment free from traffic, pollution and everything associated with the stresses of urban living.

In addition to conservation and land management, foresters work with the government in maintaining forest land and accommodating visitors and events. Traditionally, professional foresters develop and implement “forest management plans”. These plans rely on tree inventories showing an area’s topographical features as well as its distribution of trees (by species) and other plant cover.

With growing concern for the environment and the necessity to start living a “green” lifestyle, foresters have a very important job. Consequently, a forester’s salary reflects this importance. In the United States, the median salary for a forester is $54,540 per year while the top ten-percent can earn up to $75,540. Pay rate is affected by education and experience. Foresters typically have Bachelor’s degrees in forestry, geology or related physical or biological sciences.

For those who are working in the industry or looking to go into forestry, there are several online programs and classes available. The benefits of an online course is that it allows a working or busy student flexibility to take his or her courses and work at a more comfortable pace. Accredited colleges and universities offer a range of online classes which allow for credits that are applied toward receiving a degree. If you are working full time, or are already taking conventional classes, consider an online course or program to supplement your work.
