Early Childhood Education – Degrees and Courses

Early Childhood Education Careers and Training

A degree in Early Childhood Education is meant for adult educators who want to use their free time learning the proper ways to instruct children while they are employed in a full time job. These degrees can include a certificate, an associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, or a doctorate diploma and the students can take the liberty of completing the classes at their own pace.

The certificate degree may consist of a basic introduction to the initial procedures of child development. An associate’s degree can include classes on applied instruction, general liberal arts and sciences courses. It also may include detailed courses on teaching methods for young children and child growth and development. Completing the 2-year associate’s degree makes a student capable of holding a teaching position in a preschool or day care center.

Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education is the standard path for becoming a public school teacher. This 4-year program includes core liberal arts and sciences requirements, along with specific childhood education courses. A student learns details about classroom management skills, elementary instruction methods, and literacy education.

The 2-year Master of Education (MEd) in Early Childhood Education is an option for those students who want to become childhood education administrators, curriculum developers, and program directors. This degree gives them the scope to specialize in curriculum design, educational technology, or educational leadership. The PhD in Early Childhood Education is meant for candidates who want to make a career as educational researchers, professors, educational policymakers, and high-ranking administrators.

Salary and Employment Information

The U.S. Department of Labor estimates the salary of preschool-kindergarten teachers to be approximately $47,750, while that of elementary school teachers is about $50,040. The increasing importance of providing extra attention to children’s formative years may push up the salary limits further in the coming years.
