Carpentry and Construction – Online Training and Certificate Programs

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who perform carpentry. The work involves manual labor and woodworking for buildings, homes and furniture. Carpenters typically start as apprentices and learn their skills and trade on the job. In addition to learning through practical application, carpenters may also take classes as required by their union or region. Skills in math are critical to a carpenter’s work as it involves measuring and calculating certain procedures and being thoroughly familiar with a project.

In the United States, it is an easy trade to enter and there are no educational standards for a carpenter, although many employers look for a high school diploma or equivalent. In other countries, standards are much more strict. As with any profession, an employee who is better educated will receive higher pay and a faster rate of promotion. There are several types of carpenters, such as joiners and cabinet makers, and salary depends on experience, skill, education and trade.

The median salary for a carpenter in the United States is $39,530 while the upper 75th percentile is $53,880. Employee credentials, education and experience play a large role in earning capacity, so continuing one’s education online can be of tremendous benefit. Since many laborers are busy and don’t have time for conventional classes, online programs can be equally beneficial but with the benefits of working from home. An online program can help in retaining information learned on the job and for learning about the trade and how to further one’s career as a carpenter. There are many resources online that can often offer information that may not be learned while performing a job under the eye of a journeyman. By supplementing an apprenticeship with an online program, the possibility of earning more and being promoted quickly is greatly affected when compared with apprentices who rely strictly on their work.
