Accounting Careers
Accountants undertake a variety of tasks including auditing, accounting, litigation, tax planning, and financial advisory services. Because of the diversified nature of their jobs, accountants and auditors are employed in all sorts of positions like accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping, and payroll services. In the advanced stages of their career, accountants can also become a faculty at a college or university, a tax examiner, or open their own businesses.
In order to qualify as a professional accountant in a private or government institution, a student needs to seek a formal accounting degree. He or she can also receive an accounting degree online by enrolling in any of the accredited colleges and universities that offer business degrees online. Under a Bachelor’s accounting degree, a student must complete coursework in financial accounting, managerial accounting, taxation, and auditing. At the completion of a Bachelor’s accounting degree, a student can pursue any career option like Certified Public Accountant (CPA) who work in public sectors, Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) who work as auditors for private companies, or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) who can work both for public and private agencies. However, the career opportunities are brighter for students who complete their Master’s degree or earn a certification or license before becoming a professional.
Because of the implementation of stricter accounting and reporting guidelines to avoiding corporate scandals, the demand for skilled and good academic record-holder accounts is on the rise. Other factors contributing to the increase in the demand for ethical, knowledgeable, and well-trained accountants are increasing globalization of companies and a spate of retirements in the coming years, which will create a yawning gap of vacancies.
Salary Information and Job Outlook
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the employment opportunities for accountants and auditors will grow by 22% throughout the next ten years. The estimated average salary for candidates holding Bachelor’s degrees in accounting to be $61,690 per year while more experienced accountants and auditors can earn as high as $106,880.
